The largest use of polyvinyl alcohol is as a raw material for polyvinyl butyral, which as a plasticized film forms the interlayer for laminated glass ("safety glass") in automobile windshields and the windows of buildings. The second largest use is of polyvinyl alcohol is as a component of adhesives, and the third, as a textile size. Polyvinyl alcohol is also used extensively as a coatings additive.
